Hydrogen will be a key component of the energy transition, given its ability to store sustainably-produced energy indefinitely. It is extremely powerful, having the highest energy content by weight of any fuel, and its storage is not limited by weather conditions or reliant on environmentally harmful substances.
The main concern with hydrogen fuel is safe storage and transportation. A small, light molecule, hydrogen must be kept under high pressure to maintain its effectiveness. Transferring hydrogen into and out of storage units is a delicate process, requiring tightly-fitted, corrosion resistant piping. Hydrogen storage units must also be well-sealed to avoid leakage and properly managed to avoid the risk of hydrogen explosions.
Expertise and innovation
Vallourec has decades of expertise in developing tightly sealed, corrosion-resistant tubes that interact with hydrogen. Our experts are participating in R&D projects to further develop the viability of hydrogen as fuel, working with partners across Europe to find tubular solutions for hydrogen transport and storage.
